Hawaii Hurricane Preparedness

Hurricanes can be dangerous killers. Learning the hurricane warning messages and planning ahead can reduce the chances of injury or major property damage.

When a WATCH is issued:

  • Make sure your car has gasoline.
  • Review escape plans for your family and household pets.
  • Listen for weather information.
  • Make sure medical prescriptions are filled, and packed to go.
  • Gather important papers, including identification.

When a WARNING is issued:

  • Anchor garbage cans, awnings and other outside objects securely, or move them into your house.
  • Place protective covering over windows and garage doors.
  • Garage or store vehicles left behind.
  • Secure boats or store inside protective shelter.
  • Shut off water, electricity and gas.
  • If you have a swimming pool, cover the pump filter.

If You Stay:

  • If you are not ordered to evacuate and you decide to stay:
  • Plan an escape route in case you need to evacuate later.
  • Pack a hurricane survival kit with containers of fresh water, first-aid kit, flashlight with fresh batteries, non-perishable food and a radio.
  • Stay indoors away from windows and glass doors.
  • The safest place to go is underground, in a basement, and under a sturdy object, such as a bench.
  • If you do not have access to an underground shelter (as many coastal residents do not), head toward the center of your house, where there is extra reinforcement and the maximum number of walls between you and outside elements.
  • Keep your radio tuned to weather information until the all-clear has been sounded.

If You Leave:

  • Leave the area for a safer place inland, or go directly to a shelter, as directed by local authorities.
  • Lock doors and windows before leaving.

Afterward:

  • Street debris, flooding, emergency vehicles, and out of service traffic signals and street lights may make driving hazardous.
  • Stay away from rivers or streams.
  • Downed or dangling power lines pose a lethal threat.
  • Check electrical, water and gas lines. Make emergency repairs to prevent further damage.
  • Check to see that refrigerated food hasn't spoiled.
  • Make sure drinking water is safe to drink.
